Vehicle recalls on the rise as Volkswagen recalls 177,000 SUVs

Volkswagen is recalling 177,493 of its crossover SUVs, specifically certain Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport models from the 2024 and 2025 model years, due to a potential fire risk.

The recall is prompted by the possibility of loose engine covers, which may have been improperly installed after vehicle servicing. These loose covers could contact hot engine surfaces, increasing the risk of fire, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Volkswagen dealers will remove the engine covers free of charge to resolve the issue.

This recall follows another recent recall by Hyundai, involving 9,000 vehicles due to concerns about brake fluid leaks potentially causing engine fires.

Data indicates a trend of increasing vehicle recalls. In the first eight months of 2024, the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) recalled nearly 1.2 million vehicles. By the end of the year, approximately 250 car recalls were issued, affecting up to 2.3 million vehicles. This contrasts with 1994, when only 27 passenger car recalls were issued.

The increase in recalls is attributed to the growing complexity of modern vehicles, which incorporate more electrical components.

CarVertical’s analysis suggests that 3.1% of cars in the UK have been subject to at least one recall. This is considered a low rate compared to other European countries.

A significant challenge arises when recalled vehicles are sold and owner records are not updated, making it difficult for manufacturers to contact current owners. Vehicle owners are legally responsible for ensuring their cars are safe and free of outstanding recall notices.
