UK garages still struggling with technician shortages

Staff shortages remain one of the biggest problems facing the UK aftermarket. With more vehicles on the road and the growing complexity of EVs and diagnostics, workshops across the country are struggling to find enough skilled technicians to meet demand.

While the issue has been widely recognised, practical solutions have been harder to come by. One recruitment business, Easy2Recruit, believes it has found an answer that more and more garage owners are now turning to — international recruitment.

“Since we started in June 2023, we’ve helped over 50 workshops fill vacancies with fully-qualified, English-speaking technicians from overseas,” says Ambi Singh, founder of Easy2Recruit. “They arrive ready to work, with full visa support and proper relocation. It’s not a risky process anymore — we’ve made it straightforward and reliable.”

The business works closely with UK employers to bring in skilled workers under the government-backed Skilled Worker visa scheme. Easy2Recruit handles the process end-to-end — from right-to-work compliance and visa sponsorship, to flights, housing, and local support.

Singh adds: “Some garage owners call us because they’ve run ads for months with no luck. Others are losing staff and can’t replace them. Our job is to step in and bring in people who are ready to stay, work, and build a future here.”

To promote awareness and help more garages understand how the system works, Easy2Recruit will be attending four major automotive trade events this year:

– Mechanex Harrogate – 15–16 May

– GSF TechFest North, Manchester – 21 May

– Automechanika Birmingham – 3–5 June

– GSF TechFest Midlands, Coventry – 19 June

The team will be on hand to answer questions, share real examples, and walk garage owners through the process of bringing in technicians from abroad.

“Many people still don’t realise how accessible international recruitment has become,” says Singh. “You don’t need to figure it out alone — we do the work and make it easy.”
