The Motor Ombudsman collaborates with Ben to support mental health

The Motor Ombudsman, the dedicated automotive industry ombudsman, has partnered with Ben, the automotive industry charity, to launch ‘Steer’ – a new quick-reference guide.

Available in both printed and free-to-download formats from The Motor Ombudsman’s website, ‘Steer’ aims to help automotive businesses identify and support employees facing mental health and wellbeing challenges. These issues, which can stem from various factors both inside and outside the workplace, affect individuals of all ages and backgrounds.

The development of ‘Steer’ was prompted by an annual poll conducted by The Motor Ombudsman among vehicle repairers. This research revealed that increasing pressures on the mental and physical health of team members, particularly due to rising bills and the cost of living, were a primary concern for nearly half (49%) of vehicle repair businesses regarding their workforce. These findings are consistent with Ben’s own annual Health and Wellbeing survey, which surveyed over 1,000 automotive workers across the UK. Ben’s report highlighted stress (57%), poor sleep (52%), and anxiety (44%) as the top three health and wellbeing issues for automotive employees. These figures are higher than the previous year and exceed national averages, underscoring the impact of financial pressures, especially given the recent rise in household bills in April.

Jointly designed and written by The Motor Ombudsman and Ben, ‘Steer’ seeks to raise awareness of how mental health struggles can influence workforce morale, engagement, and performance. The guide provides practical strategies and guidance on how to approach and support those encountering challenges, directing readers to resources and support available from Ben.

The launch edition of ‘Steer’ covers several key areas:

  • An overview of mental health and common drivers of personal struggles.
  • Guidance on how employers can foster a positive and open mental health-aware environment.
  • Approaching mental health and wellbeing, emphasising the importance of good communication, and outlining key steps in supporting automotive employees.
  • Case studies and testimonials illustrating how garages have supported individuals and sought assistance from Ben.
  • A summary of key findings from Ben’s latest annual Health and Wellbeing survey report.
  • An overview of the free and confidential support, services, and resources provided by Ben for automotive industry professionals.

Bill Fennell, Chief Ombudsman and Managing Director of The Motor Ombudsman, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, stating that ‘Steer’ is designed to guide businesses in identifying mental health challenges and to empower open dialogue between employers and employees. He stressed that people are an organisation’s most valuable resource and that it’s important for individuals to know support is available, both internally and externally. Fennell also noted that ‘Steer’ reinforces The Motor Ombudsman’s own commitment to staff wellbeing and training.

Rachel Clift, Ben’s Chief Executive Officer, highlighted the importance of this resource in raising awareness about mental health within the industry, where a stigma can still exist. She noted that personal struggles are not always visible, making understanding, open conversations, and highlighting available support crucial. Clift believes ‘Steer’ will be an invaluable tool for businesses, especially as many in the industry find it difficult to express vulnerability.
