The Independent Garage Association (IGA) and Digidentity have outlined the security framework for the UK’s SERMI scheme, which goes live on 1st April. The scheme regulates access to security-related repair and maintenance information (RMI), such as immobilisers, key coding, and secure ECU functions.
To participate, businesses and individual technicians must pass background checks, including identity verification and criminal record audits. Approved applicants receive a “digital passport” valid for five years. Digidentity serves as the UK Trust Centre, providing the infrastructure for these validations.
Stuart James, Chief Executive of the IGA, stated:
“Security is the foundation of SERMI. This is not simply about access to information, it’s about demonstrating that independent garages and their technicians meet the highest standards of integrity, identity assurance, and accountability.”
A significant number of independent garages have already completed accreditation. Marcel Wendt, Founder and CTO of Digidentity, added:
“The launch of SERMI in the UK marks a pivotal shift toward a more secure and transparent automotive landscape. As the UK Trust Centre, Digidentity is proud to provide the rigorous verification infrastructure that makes this possible.”
The introduction of SERMI is intended to provide consumers with reassurance regarding vehicle data security while ensuring independent garages maintain access to modern, protected vehicle systems. From 1st April, the scheme will set a new benchmark for accountable vehicle repair.
