Seized vehicles provided to Cumbrian colleges for mechanical training

A scheme repurposing vehicles seized by Cumbria Police is providing practical training assets for motor vehicle students across the county. Approximately 1,000 vehicles are seized annually in Cumbria, primarily for insurance offences. Under the direction of the Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner, David Allen, these are now diverted from scrappage to educational facilities.

The initiative currently supports Carlisle College, Kendal, Barrow-in-Furness, and Lakes College. Previously, students often worked on the same vehicles for several years. The new programme provides a fresh influx of cars every six to twelve months, including electric vehicles and varied engine types.

Callum Radcliffe, motor vehicle lecturer at Carlisle College, stated:

“The students get to work on different engines and models, even electric vehicles. For students and tutors, the scheme works great for us. The partnership is amazing for us, the fresh set of cars coming in every six months is just a god-send.”

Beyond mechanical skills, the scheme facilitates police engagement with the 16–25 age demographic to discuss road safety. Commissioner David Allen noted the economic value of the project:

“I’m happy to give these cars to the college, so they save money that they can reinvest back into the students. Let’s recycle property that’s been seized, that’s, in this case, unroadworthy and dangerous, and actually get some good value out of it.”

By working on diverse models, from Nissan Micras to Mazdas, students gain experience relevant to current aftermarket requirements.
