The Independent Garage Association (IGA) has reported that 19 vehicle brands have committed to the SERMI scheme within days of the UK go-live announcement. This standardised system allows independent garages to access security-related repair and maintenance information (RMI) through a single, secure authorisation process.
Manufacturers that have already committed include:
- Stellantis Brands: Abarth, Alfa Romeo, Chrysler, Citroën, Dodge, DS Automobiles, Fiat, Jeep®, Lancia, Maserati, Opel, Peugeot, Ram Trucks, and Vauxhall.
- Other Major Manufacturers: Ford, Jaguar, Land Rover, Nissan, and Toyota.
The IGA expects further brands to join the scheme in the coming weeks. Stuart James, Chief Executive of the IGA, stated:
‘The response from vehicle manufacturers has been extremely positive. To have 19 on board within days of notifying them of UK approval shows just how important SERMI is to the future of our sector. This scheme will positively change the operational capability of independent garages and provide something we simply haven’t had in the UK before.’
The association is advising garage owners to assess whether SERMI registration is necessary for their specific business models. The application process involves government DBS checks for both the business and individual technicians, which can take a minimum of two weeks.
Stuart James added:
‘It’s essential that garages are secure in their own minds about whether SERMI is something they need. Our role is to continue providing clear and accurate information so businesses can make an informed choice that’s right for them.’
