Industry reacts to 2030 Petrol and Diesel ban reinstatement

The UK government has reaffirmed its commitment to banning the sale of new petrol and diesel cars from 2030. This decision, announced by Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander, reverses the previous government’s decision to delay the ban until 2035.

The government has launched a consultation to gather feedback from the public and industry stakeholders on the implementation of this policy. This move aims to provide clarity for manufacturers, boost investor confidence in charging infrastructure, and encourage consumer uptake of electric vehicles (EVs).

While the 2030 deadline has been reinstated, concerns remain within the automotive industry. Manufacturers have called for continued government support, including incentives to encourage consumer adoption of EVs.

The industry has experienced uncertainty due to previous changes to the ban timeline. Manufacturers, such as Ford, have emphasised the need for consistent government policies to support long-term investment and planning.

The consultation period will end on February 18th, 2025, allowing stakeholders to submit their views to the Department for Transport.
