The Independent Garage Association (IGA) has announced that the UK has gained full approval for the European SERMI scheme. This makes the UK the only nation outside the European Union to participate in the framework, which regulates secure access to vehicle security-related repair and maintenance information (RMI).
As modern vehicles become increasingly software-reliant, independent repairers have faced barriers in accessing the data required for security-critical components. SERMI provides a standardised, trusted pathway that allows legitimate independent businesses to operate alongside main dealer networks. The IGA developed a bespoke integration for the UK by working with the European SERMI Board and securing access to the European SERMI Trust Centre.
Stuart James, Chief Executive Officer of the IGA, stated:
“This has been a 17-year journey, and the scale of this achievement cannot be underestimated. Independent garages have long faced barriers accessing vital security-related vehicle information, and SERMI now provides a recognised, trusted route to that access. The UK is the only country outside the European Union to secure this approval, and that reflects the IGA’s determination to protect the future of independent repair.”
The scheme is intended to demonstrate the professionalism of independent garages while ensuring they remain competitive. The IGA is also working on further projects regarding secure gateway and cyber security access for future vehicle generations.
