IGA and IPO renew campaign to combat counterfeit car parts

The Independent Garage Association (IGA) is continuing its collaboration with the Intellectual Property Office (IPO) to support the national ‘Fake Always Breaks’ campaign. This initiative aims to highlight the dangers of counterfeit vehicle parts and stress the need for vigilance across the motor trade.

The ongoing work is underscored by the recent seizure of over £100,000 worth of fake automotive components in South Gloucestershire, including spark plugs, filters, and sensors. This discovery demonstrates the persistent threat posed by counterfeit parts to motorists and the independent garages that serve them.

Counterfeit components are manufactured using inferior materials and bypass the rigorous safety testing required for genuine parts. This means they are far more likely to fail, which puts drivers, passengers, and other road users at serious risk.

The IGA is working with the IPO to raise awareness within the independent garage sector, providing regular communications, guidance, and educational resources. This aims to ensure workshops can identify, report, and avoid counterfeit parts, especially as demand increases during the busy winter service season.

Jonathan Douglass, Director of the IGA, stated: “This recent seizure is a stark reminder of the risks counterfeit parts pose to motorists and garages alike. Independent workshops are on the frontline of vehicle safety, and it’s vital they have the knowledge and tools to protect their customers.”

He added: “By staying alert to the risks and sourcing only from trusted suppliers, garages can safeguard their customers, their businesses, and Britain’s roads.”

The IGA is urging all independent garages to familiarise themselves with the IPO’s guidance on spotting and reporting counterfeit parts. Warning signs include poor-quality packaging, vague product descriptions, and missing safety information.
