How commercial roots, loyal customers and a no-nonsense attitude have kept Dunkleys of Deal going strong

From heavy recovery work across Kent to a loyal local customer base, Dunkleys of Deal has adapted through decades of industry change – without losing its honest, no-frills approach. We spoke to the team to hear how it all started, what the garage looks like today, and what’s next for this long-standing MOT and repair specialist.

What does the business look like today?

We focus on MOTs – Class 4, 5 and 7 – and regular servicing. Class 5 testing sets us apart locally, as not many garages still offer it. We’ve also got a dedicated MOT test lane, which helps things run efficiently.

We’ve scaled back on heavy commercials simply because it’s just me and Ray who can do them, and to be honest, my back can’t handle them all anymore! But we’ve kept the standards high and the workflow manageable.

What makes Dunkleys different?

We’re straight with people. No fluff, no hard sell. If we can’t fit you in, we’ll tell you. If a job’s not worth the cost, we’ll say so. That honesty keeps people coming back.

We’re local, familiar, and we’ve got proper relationships with our customers – some have been coming for years. Even the shop front’s built with purpose; we kitted it out with shelving and snacks so people can treat themselves while they wait. No gimmicks, just a practical space that works.

What are the top benefits for your customers?

We’ve got a lot of regulars who rely on us for monthly inspections and repeat work. We use a system called KIS Online, which helps us log everything properly – job history, technical help, factory times, and all the admin. It’s not flashy, but it works and keeps the whole place ticking over.

And if we can’t fix something in-house, we don’t waste time pretending. We’ve always been upfront with people, and they respect that.

Why did you join Servicesure?

We joined a few years ago and dip into it where it helps. It’s great to know it’s there for us when we need it.

For example, we use the waste oil collection and get a better price because of our membership.

You were involved in recovery work for years – what was that like?

We handled heavy recovery across South Kent – everything from ambulances to accident response. I had the southern patch and covered it for about 15 years. It was hard work but rewarding.

Now the contracts have gone national and most of that’s done through call centres. We still get the odd job, but nothing like before. Suits me fine!

Have you received any awards or recognition?

No awards – don’t need them. I’ve got two great kids, a solid business, and I’ve passed every technical and recovery course thrown at me. That’s plenty.
