HELLA recently welcomed Kayne Dancey-Brock and Luke Rowlinson, two 17-year-olds from Banbury & Bicester College, for a work experience placement at its Banbury facility. Both students are studying for their Level 1 Certificate in Vehicle Maintenance and sought to expand their understanding of the automotive aftermarket, having previously visited HELLA’s site with their college.
Suzanne Plows, HR Manager at HELLA UK, highlighted the value of connecting learning with real-world careers. She noted the students’ enthusiasm and curiosity, stating they gained a broader understanding of aftermarket operations and potential career paths.
During their placement, Kayne and Luke experienced various departments. They learned about logistics and stock control in the warehouse, explored product management, observed live remote diagnostics sessions using Hella Gutmann’s macsRemote service, and saw demonstrations of Advanced Driver-Assistance System (ADAS) calibration. They also visited HELLA’s product showroom to learn about OE lighting and electronics.
Kayne found the remote diagnostics particularly impressive, stating he “had no idea this level of tech was involved in car repairs.” The students observed 22 live support tickets, covering complex tasks like key programming and airbag calibrations, providing real-time insight into modern workshop demands.
Luke commented on how the experience “widened my thoughts on what I can do in the future” and praised the team’s welcoming approach. While Luke has secured an apprenticeship at TWB Motors, Kayne’s ongoing search highlights the broader challenge young people face in securing such opportunities within the industry.
Suzanne Plows emphasised that investing in the next generation is essential for the aftermarket’s future, helping young people build skills and ensuring the industry continues to thrive.
