Vehicles equipped with the original PSA 1.5 ECOBLUE/BLUE HDI engines are experiencing premature and catastrophic failure. These engines rely on EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) and DPF (Diesel Particulate Filters) to meet Euro emissions standards, improving fuel economy and reducing emissions. However, this design has a major drawback – harmful soot deposits accumulate internally, particularly in the oil, leading to excessive engine wear.
Despite regular maintenance, these abrasive particles circulate through the lubrication system, accelerating wear on the Timing Chain and integrated Camshaft Sprockets. With a manufacturer-recommended 20,000-mile oil change interval, contamination is inevitable, contributing to premature engine failure. In response, manufacturers revised their oil recommendation from 0W30 to 5W30 to help reduce wear.
To combat these failures, OE upgraded the original 7mm pitch Timing Chain to an 8mm version in January 2023. This new chain features thicker plates, a 16% increase in width, and greater tensile strength for improved durability. As a result, the Camshaft Sprockets and Cam Carrier were also modified to accommodate the upgraded chain.
For mechanics repairing issues related to the Timing Chain or Camshafts, BGA strongly recommends upgrading to the CS2335FK or CS2336FK rebuild kit, ensuring a longer-lasting, more robust solution that prevents repeat failures and improves engine reliability.
